Weekly Reading Material

We recently stopped receiving the Tulsa World newspaper for various and sundry reasons that bore me so I know they would bore you. However, we have continued receiving the Sunday NYTimes. It takes all week to work through the paper, but it is worth it for the journalistic quality as well as the breadth and depth of the articles. Many times I do not finish, so I must prioritize what I read. First, I reach for the NYTimes Book Review. I typically read all of it and often make additions to my wish list. Second, I pull out the NYTimes Magazine. There are several weekly columns that I read first:

On Language by William Saffire
Consumed by Rob Walker
The Ethicist Q&A by Randy Cohen
Funny Pages
Freakonomics (usually once/month or so)
The Sunday Serial

After reading these, I am ready for the meat of the magazine. Typically, there are long, well written and interesting articles on subjects as wild and diverse as nuclear power, Japanese filmmakers, women in their 40's choosing to have children on their own, politics, fashion - the list is unbounded.

This past weekend was an interesting, thought provoking and educational article on Barrack Obama, "Is (His) Biography (Our) Destiny?", by James Straub. I recommend you read it.
