It's Instinct
Runner's Lounge Take It & Run Thursday topic - It was sooo obvious....
I have been contemplating this for the past day or so. I have read other posts, nodding the entire time. But my own mind is empty. I have made many mistakes in my running career and I am sure I will continue to make mistakes, hopefully not repeating them too many times before I make the necessary adjustments.
Shoes? yup, been there, too many miles on my shoes
Too few long runs? sure thing
Too many long runs? Did that one, too.
Lack of stretching? ongoing battle with that
Flip flops? maybe I can blame part of my PF on discovering Teva flip flops last summer?
So I have been digging through my memory, attempting to recover some words of wisdom. I just know it when I do it. So maybe the issue I want to talk about is to trust your instincts. If you feel tired, you just may be tired. If there is an ongoing issue you are battling, seek some expert advice. If you are having a great run and have a little more time, then extend it a bit. Remember those good runs when you are struggling through a bad run, try to resurrect how you felt, how you held your body.
When I start second guessing a decision, many times I should go with it. Why did I wear untested clothing bought at the runner's expo during the marathon the next day? Sure it was cute, but it was chafe-proof, it was not washed (ew!), it was matchy-matchy, which is not normally my style. Why did I not wear my old faithful shorts and dry-fit top? I knew better. I just did not think.
So, think, trust, use your instincts.

I've learned so much. So I took a pass on this TIART -- and I am in a funk too so it doesn't help.
The new clothes thing is a definite no no. Trust yourself... definitely wise words.
I've seen people at races wearing shiny new shoes before. I've even had friends do it. Yikes!
Responding to your comment on my site ...
When you switched from Mizuno to Asics and then to Saucony, did you go to a running store and have assistance or did you do it on your own?
From specialty stores. They were all stability shoes, so all would have been OK for me, though. I switched back to Asics on my own after the Saucony failed because I knew they were decent for me. I don't think they're perfect, though, so I keep trying.
I don't always love the store recommendations, more than once I've bought a pair, taken them home and run a couple miles on the treadmill, and returned them. It often takes several attempts!
If you know what you need (stability / neutral / motion control), you are probably OK helping yourself!
And, yes, sizing up a half size from what I was using made the numbness go away. I find in a lot of shoes, the toeboxes start to narrow too soon, at least for my feet. I could probably try wide-widths as well, but that might be too much.
I've got more than a thumb's lengtht beyond my big toe, but they aren't so big that I'm sloshing around. And my toes have plenty of room to wiggle!
Thanks, Merrymishaps!!
I agree to trust yourself and have confidence in your ability to do the right thing.
