The Game
The game in our house - at least athletically speaking - is Futbol, aka soccer.
Hubby is enthralled by it. He has inhabited this state since we installed DishNetwork and started receiving the European games. If there is nothing on television, which is often the case, then the TV seems to be on this station, muted.
I think it started when Son participated in Peace, Love & Soccer, a Saturday morning one hour combined practice / game combining University School and the local Montessori school. Son showed an aptitude for it. Hubby ended up coaching by default.
Hubby proceeded to enroll Son in several soccer camps this past summer - one through Peace, Love & Soccer that was a week long and several 2 hr /day for one week indoor soccer camps. Additionally, Son was enrolled in a Saturday morning camp.
Enter the World Cup. Soccer fever swept our house. Son was not interested in watching as he would rather play. However, both Hubby and I were glued to the matches. They were on DVR. We avoided any websites or newspapers or radio stations that would tell us the results before we could see them ourselves. We do the same thing when watching the major tennis events, so this state of deliberate avoidance is nothing new to us.
Since early summer, Hubby has organized a youth under 5 yo team with Son's schoolmates. They are good. Really good. It's actually sad to see how much better they are than the other teams they have played thus far. I think they need to play one year ahead. Hubby is again coaching.
Recently, Hubby decided he wanted to organize a men's over 30 team to play indoor soccer. He somehow conjured 11 other over 30 men to join him. Their first game is tonight.
I have been bugging him for 7+ years, which is longer than we have been married, to find a hobby. I thought golf may be it. It appears soccer may fill that void. I personally am thrilled for him. I have my running. It seems to me that every person needs an athletic, body-moving, heart pumping activity to remind ourselves that we are only as old as we let ourselves be. Until then, get moving!
