    Random Meanderings

    Annual Employee Reviews
I hate doing these. I think everyone deserves meaningful comments and feedback throughout the year, so the annual employee review should not be a surprise to anyone. Yet it will be for at least one of my employees, I am sure. I have one who things she can do no wrong. I have caught several mistakes of hers lately, it's just that she is rushing to get things done and not taking the time to double check. But I doubt she remembers that. And in the end, was it really that big of a deal? It was when I found it, but now, with 3 months' time in between, it doesn't seem like. What do you think? Anyway, I have the reviews done and need to read through some archived emails I set aside for the purpose of providing examples and comments. YUCK. My least favorite part of my job. What made me think I would like managing people?

    Tirade
I went off on my hubby last week about a project manager who did not clearly understand he needed to provide a change order when his job to date costs exceeded his estimate and his job is not completely paid out to subs yet. He didn't get it. Hubby told me to work with the VP-Ops to get this done. So on Monday, when VP-Ops returned from vacation, I hit him up with it. He clearly understood. This morning, I received the change order. Net $90,000 increase in estimate. Hm. I was right! I love saying that.

    Daycare versus Preschool
Son is out of preschool for the summer, back at his old daycare. He told me this morning he likes it better but would not tell me why. I do not like it better. The daycare environment, even with some learning, is so much more chaotic. More children, different behavior patterns, they feed him lunch and afternoon snack, he lays down to rest, but not nap, etc. I hope the 12 wks of summer pass quickly.

    Grabbing the Reins
I took back some control over the morning routine this morning, thanks to Gretchen's advice. He changed his clothes, brushed his teeth and put on his shoes and socks - without too much prompting. He told me he is going to wait until he is 5 yo to learn to tie his shoes. Okay. We are headed to Borders after work to buy a weekly calendar with magnets of chores and fun things. Let's hope it is not a fluke.

    Soccer Mania
Son scored 8 goals at his soccer game. I fear it is becoming not-fun for the other children on our team. So, next season, we have him enrolled in a different league. He will also be going to various soccer camps this summer. I hope it is not overboard for him.

    The Bump
William Safire http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20B10FC3D5A0C778DDDAC0894DE404482 discusses the new usage of the word "bump" to describe the physical manifestation of a pregnant woman. My own bump is quite visible. Not quite yet "leading with the bump" when I walk and definitely not waddling yet. I feel like I am 26 wks, not 20 wks. Sitting at the computer is not comfortable for long periods of time, so I get up and walk around every hour. But the bump may get a name tomorrow. We find out the gender.
