The Big 4-0
I hit the big 4-0 today. No, it is not my birthday. Although I am staring at that age in a little less than nine months, that milestone is not something I am celebrating today.
Today I hit 40 miles for my weekly mileage. I have not logged that mileage for 18 months, since I last was running over 15 mile long runs during marathon training. Even then, I did not sustain it for long.
Recently, I was reviewing my weekly mileage and determined that I increase it to 35-45 mi/week from the 28-34 miles/wk that I had been averaging. Since April and the advent of the Spring Training Plan, I have slowly been increasing that number. I feel good about it, too.
My plan is and has been to achieve a strong base from which I will launch my marathon training plan. Tomorrow is the offical start day of the 18 week marathon training plan. The twelve week base plan passed quickly.
As I look at the increasing length of the weekly long run, I am both excited and fearful. I fear my anxiety about running in heat and humidity will affect my overall performance greater than the actual weather. I fear I have deluded myself into thinking I have the willpower and strength to go through with another marathon. I am excited about meeting these challenges head-on and conquering them.
