The random selection for the Nike Women's Marathon is complete and I sit here with a positive selection, while my friend Gretchen was not selected and feels a bit rejected. I am bummed and I think next time we both go for a random selection we will register as a team. That way, we both are rejected or selected together. In the meantime, she is deciding upon Twin Cities Marathon just two weeks prior to mine.
Now, the selection of a training program is to be determined. 20 weeks has me starting a program at the beginning of June. Given the summertime temps and the prospect of long runs in August, I may increase that to 26 weeks. That would be the end of April. Just right, don't you think?
So how on earth am I going to run 20 miles in the middle of August here where the temps are in the mid to high 90's and the humidity is a killer? Why did I not consider this dilemma when I registered? Oh, yeah. I never thought I would be selected. I thought I would be safe. I thought I could wait and then register for a marathon in late November or early December.
So now I must think that the training is going to be worth achieving the finish line with firemen in tuxedoes giving out the Tiffany finisher's necklace.

It is definitely a bummer that you both didn't get in. Good luck with crafting a good training plan given the weather there in the summer--maybe you'll get an unexpected cool spell to accomodate your needs :)
I was suprised to read in Runner's World the other day that you perform better at 36 than you do at 68. I really hate running in the cold and always feel like a slug.
Yes. The training will be worth it.
I am so very excited for you!
Too bad you both didn't get in. Funny, I really want to do the Montreal Marathon but it puts my 20 miler in mid-August and I was thinking the same thing... how do I do it in the heat.
We are such fickly creatures, we runners.
Hey! I've been a little out of touch, so I didn't know you were selected... congrats!
I am not quite ready to consider this... but it's on my list of "40 by 40" so we'll see. I need to find one to do mid-year in 2009.
