    Distractions Galore!

Do you ever feel like when you need to buckle down and work like crazy, you find so many distractions? I am way way way behind on work, yet cannot refrain from reading everything about politics and the Iowa Caucus, the upcoming NH Caucus and further information delineating the differences in the candidates.

Then my mind wanders to my friend Anne's sister, who has arrived home from Vietnam, where she and her family adopted a baby girl who is just amazing and beautiful and makes my heart swell for them.

My mind next jumps to fuel efficiency and the atrocious gas mileage my vehicle earns. It is embarassing. And now that I no longer work in the energy industry, I do not feel compelled to ignore it. So I am on the search for a vehicle that still meets my needs, yet is fuel efficient. My short list is a Toyota Prius, Honda Accord Hybrid, and a MINI Cooper Clubman. Really, I think I might just go with a Prius. I drive roughly 30 mi/day, stop and go from the house to school, then highway from school to work and reverse at the end of the day. Other than that, I drive a lot in town. This is where I think the hybrids would be good. I like to go fast, but honestly, do I really need to go fast? Not really. And we will still have W's vehicle, which is roomy and fast.

It is not just the fuel-efficiency that is getting me. I think sometime recently I grew beyond needing / wanting the fancy, expensive vehicle with all the trimmings and have started to view it as utilitarian. Again, maybe I can do this because we still have W's vehicle.

It's sort of statement, too, isn't it? I want to let people know that I do care about the environment and that I do care about saving money and the cost of foreign oil -not just monetary cost, but the associated costs.

Next my mind flits over to the oh-so-cool Pandora. Now that I am in an office, I can finally listen to music - any music at a decent level. Loving it!

What distractions are keeping you from accomplishing your goals today?

    Hello my dear.
We did the math for the price difference and meagre savings in mileage, we decided on a plain old Civic. (Very happy with our decision. Just my two cents.)

    Distractions on this end:
Well, I am at home with The Boy and his friend who I call Owl. And my nose, which is snotty. I'd hoped to do scads of laundry... but it's not to be.

Yesterday, it was girl drama at the office that had been going on all week, Joey was home sick for only the second time in 12 years, and Monkey Man has his first basketball practice so I had to scramble around to find a youth-sized basketball. Oh, and EPOD was crabby. That pretty much sums it up!

I'm with you on the vehicle musings. I'm conscious of fuel efficiency, carbon footprints and the like, but necessity prevents me from being choosy - there aren't many cars that take six people that are kind to the atmosphere. I kind of counteract it by recycling, using up leftover food, composting, passing clothes down, charity bagging and the like. It makes me feel better anyway!

As for the distractions, I've sooo got to stop surfing the net at work - I'm wayyy behind. LOL

I'd pee my pants in excitement if you got a Prius.

P.S. a coworker just got one, if you want to pick her brain!
