    How Do You Blog?

Aimee at Greeblemonkey was guest-blogging for Izzy last Friday and wrote about the process of blogging. Over the past year and a half that I have been writing on here, I have at times wanted to discuss heavier subjects and give it more time and thought than I have traditionally put into a post. So when you cover a subject that requires more time and more effort in order to properly communicate it to others, how do you go about it?

Do you compose in a different software package and cut and paste it here?
Do you compose here as a draft and simply edit it as you see fit?
Do you work on it over a period of time or at one sitting or several days?
Do you stew on it while you drink coffee?
Where are you when you blog?

What if I wanted to improve my blog and get away from this standard Blogger type format? Can someone point me toward a how-to and a good reference book or reference site? While I like the green and it sort of personifies my name (Tree), I would like a masthead and would love to learn how to make my blog better.

    I would like to evolve.

I can't wait to hear what others have to say because I have been having those same evolutionary thoughts.

    Whew boy. Good questions!!!

Well, I have a million little process that go into how the blog comes together as a whole, and they have evolved over times. But for now:

    - I have about 15 drafts going on ideas I want to write about at some point. If they never gel, I eventually delete them.

    - I have a memo/note going on my iPhone of ideas or cute things that Declan has said while we are out and periodically email it to myself

    - Worst case scenario I will leave a voicemail for myself if I cannot type something as an idea strikes.

(Basically because I have OCD tinges and otherwise I will renumerate the idea over and over, LOL).

    - Believe it or not, I am still on Blogger. It does not appear that I am, but I design my template via Dreamweaver and copy and paste the code into Blogger so the main takes on the appearance of the rest of the pages and then when I post to Blogger, viola! I just got used to it and never bothered to try anything else. WordPress seems to be a popular alternative, though.

    – I can certainly help you with the design!

I'm thinking on the same page too. I'd love to evolve my blog and increase my readership and get some feedback on my posts. At the moment I just put down what I'm thinking as I really don't have the time to think too long about things and I certainly don't have the time to present it professionally. If I knew a few short cuts then it would be different.

I'm keeping an eye on this post of yours to see what answers come up!

-- Sometimes, but not often. When I have a big long one I sometimes use wordperfect because it doesn't crash as often and it spell checks. Now that blogger has the automatic save function, I don't use the word processor as often.

Do you compose here as a draft and simply edit it as you see fit? On my personal blog I do minimal editing. On my professional blog, I draft and then edit within the program (I use moveable type).

Do you work on it over a period of time or at one sitting or several day -- nearly always in one sitting.

Do you stew on it while you drink coffee? -- once in awhile

Where are you when you blog? -- either at home or work now. When I start my new job I will always post from home.

What if I wanted to improve my blog and get away from this standard Blogger type format? -- Aimee is the master on this. For my professional blog (www.harmfulerror.com) I found a template and then paid the designer - I could have used it for free, but he accepted donations and it seemed that as a matter of fairness that I should pay something. Neither of mine are super-fancy as I just don't have the creative ability to make it happen without a lot of time and effort. Neither of mine have advertising as I'm in an anti-commercialization mood right now as I think that advertisements are taking over the universe, but that's just me.

    Good luck!

Aimee - I have moved to firefox at home - how does it spell check - never mind - is that the little red underline? Duh. This is good to know.

Yes, and right click and it will bring up corrections.

I have been trying to evolve my blog a bit too. Mostly just the template but I have no idea how to even start. I have read so many different things, but I just don't have the brain power to get it.

For me, I will usually handwrite notes of things I want to discuss. Then I will type it, saving and working on it until I'm ready to publish.

Sometimes I just publish after a few edits.... like in the same sitting but those I'm not always happy with.

    Good luck, T!!!!
