Happy 5th Birthday, Son

Dear Son,

Today is your 5th birthday. As I put you to bed last night, I looked at you and could see the infant I held in my arms in the way you have always slept in complete abandon - arms flung over the head, body splayed as if boneless. Your amazingly dark and thick eyelashes rest on your cheeks. Behind your eyelids are eyes twinkling with laughter and good humor. You are tall and solid and do not realize your own size yet.

I did not want children, yet when I discovered I was pregnant with you, I embraced the idea of children wholeheartedly. The day I had you, your father cried. You won his heart instantly.

Your father and I will do everything we can to ensure you have the tools to face the world with intelligence, grace and humor.
