    Of Careers and Motivation

Received mid-term exam last night - aced it! Woo hoo. Made couple arithmetic errors, but otherwise, did well. I spoke with the professor after class on Monday to discuss application of a cash forecasting model to real world situation - my work. As it came out, he suggested I work with him on an applied research project with the company and get class credit for it.

As it happens, hubby mentions today to me that Merrill Lynch, with whom he is working on financing for a pie in the sky project, but out of which he has made some good contacts, wants to perform a cash management analysis for us. Likely at some very hefty fee. Then the recommendations would include using their services to maximize our wealth.

Fortunately, hubby agrees that we should at least know enough to manage consultants rather than giving them free reign. I have a very shady view of many consultants - whether financial, engineering or otherwise. Their jobs are to create more work for themselves, not to minimize their customer's overall costs or to necessarily maximize their customer's wealth. It seems to me there is a disparate incentive.

I'm jaded. But the point is that we are fully capable of doing some of this work ourselves. And then we own the results - we directly benefit, so of course we would do what makes the most sense, wouldn't you think?

I must say that I have not been this energized about working and about doing well at work in many years. Possibly since son was born. It is nice to feel like this again. I used to be highly motivated, I was going to be VP by the time I was 35 at a mid-sized energy company known for its innovative approach. Well, that came to nothing when I opted out about 3.5 yr ago. But now I have a chance to really excel at what I am doing - even within the confines of a family business. I have seen hubby do it - he is very good at everything he does due in equal parts to his focus, his intense ability to dissect an issue and his shear desire to be the best.

It's ironic that we were both lucky to graduate from college with decent gpa's. What does that say? It says we had too much fun in college.
